We have thus seen that the figure
through various stages of development. First the crude defi-
nition of Bhamaha, then the careful delineation of the four
divisions भेदेऽनन्यत्वम्, अभेद नानात्वम, संबन्धेऽप्यसंबन्धः [bhede'nanyatvam, abhede nānātvam, ṃbԻ'ⲹṃbԻ ] and कार्यकारणयोः

all important division. After Mammaṭa the idea
of is made still more comprehensive and predomi-
nant so that fan itself came to be defined in terms of
अध्यवसान. [ⲹԲ. ] Lastly the word अतिश [پśⲹ ] is substituted for अध्यवसान
[ⲹԲ
] and thus an explanation is given of the name अतिशयोक्ति.
[پśǰپ.
] The foregoing analysis is restricted to the line of
authors who are Kashmirians or who generally follow
the Kashmirian trend of thought. But even amongst
such authors there will be found some who do not fall in
line with the development we have traced above. Thus
Hemachandra, author of
who came after
Mammata, defines अतिशयोक्ति [پśǰپ ] thus - विशेषविवक्षय भेदाभेदयोगायोगव्-
स्ययोऽतिशयोक्तिः - काव्यानुशासन [viśeṣavivakṣayā bhedābhedayogāyogavya-
syayo'tiśayokti | - kāvyānuśāsana ] P. 264. Here, although ho men -
tions the general varieties such as भेदेऽप्यभेदः, अभेदेऽपि भेदः,
संबन्धेऽप्यसंबन्धः [bhede'pyabheda, abhede'pi bheda,
ṃbԻ'ⲹṃbԻ ] etc., he omits to mention निगीर्याध्यवसा. [ԾīⲹԲ. ] It cannot
be said in his case, as it can be said in the case of Udbhaṭa,
that he was not aware of for that he did not
accept it as a type of अतिशयोक्ति. [پśǰپ. ] For, he includes निगीर्याध्यवसा
[ԾīⲹԲ
] unders: and gives its examples under that variety.
His omission thus seems to be intentional.
