Ruyyaka has :-

verse of Rudrata -- क्षीणः क्षीणोपि शशी [kṣīṇa kṣīṇopi śśī ] etc., and explains चन्द्रापेक्षया

] The verse ' क्षीणः क्षीणोपि शशी [kṣīṇa kṣīṇopi śśī] ' must be a composition of
Rudrata as it is found in his and is in the aryā
metre. All the verses in are his own. Therefore
if we accept the view of Mammaṭa we must say that
Rudrata himself did not grasp the real meaning of his
verse; for he has cited it to illustrate the superiority of
उपमा [ܱ貹Բ ] over उपमे. [upameya. ] Mammata has very clearly shown that
the आधिक्य [ⲹ ] in this verse is of उपमे [upameya ] over उपमा [ܱ貹Բ ] i e of यौवन
[yauvana
] over शशी [śśī ] and not vice versa. He says - 'क्षीणः क्षीणोऽप शशी...... [kṣīṇa kṣīṇo'pi śśī......] '

It is peculiar to note that Bhamaha does not include
आधिक्य [ⲹ ] of उपमा [ܱ貹Բ ] over उपमे. [upameya. ] He says-
उपमानवतोर्थस्य यद्विशेषनिदर्शनम
व्यतिरेक तमिच्छन्ति विशेषापादनाद्यथा
व्यतिरेक.

] But Udbhata who always follows Bhamaha seems to have
intentionally abandoned him here. Bhamaha has attempt-
ed no divisions of af. But we have seen that Udbhata
does so though his divisions are not so scientific and exact
as those of Mammata. Mammata has 24 divisions in all.
See the passage partially quoted above from
pp. 646-47.

complements of each other and they are consecutively
treated by modern Rhetoricians like रुय्यक, मम्म, अप्पयदीक्षि,

accepted by Bhamaha, Udbhata, Dandin and others seems
to have followed no scientific principle.
