Gnosticism is a set of religious ideas related to early Christian teachings which originated in the late 1st century AD. It emphasizing personal spiritual knowledge (gnosis) over orthodox teachings and institutions. Gnostic beliefs generally distinguish between a hidden supreme God and a malevolent deity responsible for the material universe, viewed as flawed or evil. Salvation is through attaining insight and enlightenment.
