< Back to all galleries

The Magars are one of the indigenous peoples of Nepal whose written history dates back to at least the 11th century. They originated in the land of Seem (west of the Tribhuli and south of the Himalayan ranges). Alternative spelling: मग (magara). The following museum exhibitions are from the International Mountain Museum in Pokhara. The Magar tribe represents one of the largest ethnic groups of Nepal and many place-names are termed according to the Magar language.

The Magars are said to have originated in the land of Seem, situated to the west of the Tribhuli, east of Karnali, north of Shiwalik (Chure) ranges and south of the Himalayan ranges. Magarant is another name for the land of Magars, situated in western Nepal.

The Magar language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman but speak three different languages: Dhut, Kham/Pang and Magar Kaike. Their religion includes naturalism/shamanism and animalism and they are known to perform a variety of Pujas (ritualistic worship). The Magars also have their own traditions, tribal songs and dances and festivals.
