The Chhantyal (ethnic group) [Photo gallery]
The Chhantyal are an indigenous ethnic group of Nepal (the Himalayan and hilly regions) whose origins can be traced to at least the 16th century. Alternative spelling: 啶ム啶距げ啷� (chhanty膩l, chanty膩l, chanty膩la or chantyal). The following museum exhibitions are from the International Mountain Museum in Pokhara.
The Chhantyal people speak their own 鈥淜ham鈥� language which is similar to the Gurung language in some extent.
Chhantyal's religion is Buddhism but they have their own feasts and festivals. They also have many traditional customs and usages of their own. For example, after the birth of a new descendant, birth celebrations (Nwarani, Pasni, Chhaiti) will be organized. As in Thakali and Gurungs, Chhyantyals have practice of arrange marriage with their cousin. Aso, when someone dies, a purification celebration is held on the 13th day.
