Lhakhang (Room of God) [Photo gallery]
Lhakhang (or Lakhang) refers to certain religious buildings found in the Himalaya Mountain region:鈥擨n the Sherpa Language 鈥淟a鈥� means 鈥淕od鈥� and 鈥淜hang鈥� means 鈥渉ouse / room鈥�. Lakhang means house/room of God. In Solukhumbu area every Sherpa鈥檚 house has a room (Lhakhang) where they pray to God, Lord Buddha. They welcome Lamas and the respected persons, guests to have tea in the room . If some family members are going for trekking or climbing, they are offered 鈥淜hada鈥� in this room, wishing them for their successful trip. Actually, a room in which Sherpa performs religious activities or ritual performance is known as Lhakhang.
The word Lhakhang can also be spelled as: Lakhanga [la-khanga], Lakh膩峁単 [濒补-办丑腻峁単] or Lakh膩峁単a (啶侧啶距啷嵿) [濒补-办丑腻峁単a]. Alternatively, it is known as Lakhang (Lakhanga/Lhakhanga).
In Bhutan for example there are over two thousand Lhakhangs (temples) and Goenpa (monasteries) found scattered throughout villages and mountain tops/hills.
