Kaludiya Pokuna Archaeological Site [Photo gallery]

< Back to all galleries

The Archaeological Site of Kaludiya Pokuna is situated in a forest to the east of Dambulla and the Kandalama Lake (in Sri Lanka). The name “Kaludiya Pokuna means "lake of black waters" which makes sense since there a small reservoir of water in the vicinity of the main Stupa. The whole site is covered in thick jungle forest and archaeological excavations are still ongoing. Besides the ruins of various structures such as a Stupa, there are also caves with inscriptions, such as the "Kaludiyapokuna slab inscription" by Sena III (938-946 A.D.) written in Medieval Sinhala which mentions the conduct and rules for monks.

In the Sinhala language this site is known as:
කළුදිය පොකු පුරාවිද්‍ය භූමි
kaḷudiya pokuṇa purāvidyā bhūmiya
kaludiya pokuna puravidya bhumiya
