Yoktavya (योक्तव्य) refers to the “conduct (of rites)� (of protection for animals), according to the Netratantra of Kṣemarāja: a Śaiva text from the 9th century in which Śiva (Bhairava) teaches Pārvatī topics such as metaphysics, cosmology, and soteriology.—Accordingly, [verse 19.117-120, while describing the protection of the kingdom’s animals]—“[...] White mustard seed, empowered with the Mantra [placed] on the throat or head protects the elephants, [so that they] are liberated from all disease. In this way, he should conduct (yoktavyayoktavyo nṛpate� sadā) [rites of] protection for all goats and cows, etc.�.
