Vedanta (school of philosophy)

³Õ±ð»å²¹³¾Å«±ô²¹ (वेदमूल) refers to that which is “rooted in the Vedic traditionâ€.—The extent to which other traditions and branches of knowledge possess an authoritative status of their own depends on their more or less close ‘proximityâ€ to the Veda. More specifically, for Åšaá¹…kara the question is not so much whether a given tradition doctrinally agrees or not with the Veda, but whether it is rooted or not in the Vedic tradition (±¹±ð»å²¹³¾Å«±ô²¹). If a given tradition denies the authority of the Veda, whether implicitly or explicitly, or relies on an extra-Vedic authority, it must be considered heretical.

Vedanta (वेदानà¥à¤, vedÄnta) refers to a school of orthodox Hindu philosophy (astika), drawing its subject-matter from the Upanishads. There are a number of sub-schools of Vedanta, however all of them expound on the basic teaching of the ultimate reality (brahman) and liberation (moksha) of the individual soul (atman).

Vaishnavism (Vaishava dharma)

: Columbia Academic Commons: MÄ«mÄṃsÄ, VedÄnta, and the Bhakti Movement (vaiṣṇavism)

³Õ±ð»å²¹³¾Å«±ô²¹ (वेदमूल) refers to that which “illuminates the meaning of the Vedaâ€.—Madhva (or MadhvÄcÄrya, Ä€nandatÄ«rtha) refashioned the ±¹±ð»å²¹³¾Å«±ô²¹ doctrine to mean that any text which illuminates the meaning of the Veda, and is therefore “rootedâ€ in it, is independently valid. This includes not only PÄñcarÄtra Ä€gamas, but the MahÄbhÄrata, purÄṇas, and all of those “unknown sourcesâ€ which Madhva is infamous for quoting. In Madhva’s account, these authored sources manifested simultaneously with the eternal Veda, since both were transmitted by the god Viṣṇu through a series of hierarchically ordered sages. Thus no one text-tradition is given a privileged place; each informs the other in a symbiotic relationship.

Note: If we understand Å›°ù³Ü³Ù¾± to mean “that which was heard by the ancient Ṛṣis [or ‘seers’] as part of a primordial cognition in the beginning of creation,â€ then Madhva’s assertion in his [ṚgbhÄá¹£ya] that Viṣṇu reveals the Vedic corpus together with certain ³Õ±ð»å²¹³¾Å«±ô²¹ traditions effectively incorporates these ±è²¹³Ü°ù³Üá¹£e²â²¹ traditions into the primordial cognition and thus, into the category of Å›°ù³Ü³Ù¾±.
