: Acta Orientalia vol. 74 (2013): Historical sequence of the Vai峁ａ箛ava Divya诲别艣补蝉Vahindra is short for 痴补丑墨苍诲谤补pura, another name for 痴补丑墨苍诲谤补puram (or Vayintipuram), which refers to Ayintai, one of the 108 Vaishnava Divya Desam (诲颈惫测补诲别艣补蝉 or divyasthalas), located in the topographical division of Na峁璾n膩峁璾 (鈥渋ntermediary country鈥�), according to the 9th century N膩l膩yirativviyappirapantam (shortly N膩l膩yiram).鈥擳radition would record the Vai峁ａ箛ava 诲颈惫测补诲别艣补蝉 or divyasthalas are 108. The 诲颈惫测补诲别艣补 is a base of the cult of Vi峁ａ箛u in Vi峁ａ箛uism [Vai峁ａ箛avism] tradition. The list of 108 [viz., 痴补丑墨苍诲谤补-pura] seems to have reached maturation by about the early 9th century CE as all the 诲别艣补蝉 are extolled in the hymns of the twelve 膧岣籿膩rs.
Vaishnava (啶掂啶粪啶｀さ, vai峁ａ箛ava) or vaishnavism (vai峁ａ箛avism) represents a tradition of Hinduism worshipping Vishnu as the supreme Lord. Similar to the Shaktism and Shaivism traditions, Vaishnavism also developed as an individual movement, famous for its exposition of the dashavatara (鈥榯en avatars of Vishnu鈥�).
