: Journal of the University of Bombay Volume V: Apabhramsa metres (2)±«±è²¹»åÄå³¾²¹ (उपदाà¤�) refers to a variety of ³ÒÄå³Ù³óÄå: one of the oldest Prakrit meters probably developed out of the epic Anuá¹£á¹ubh, as discussed in books such as the ChandonuÅ›Äsana, Kavidarpaṇa, Vá¹›ttajÄtisamuccaya and SvayambhÅ«chandas.—Among the metres derived from the ³ÒÄå³Ù³óÄå, GÄ«ti, UpagÄ«ti and UdgÄ«ti are most important. [...] By adding 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 ³¦²¹³Ù³Ü°ù³¾Äå³Ù°ù²¹²õ before the last long letter in the first half of a ³ÒÄå³Ù³óÄå, we respectively get a JÄtiphala, GÄtha, UdgÄtha, VigÄtha, AvagÄtha, SaṃgÄtha, UpagÄtha and GÄthinÄ«. If more than 14 ³¦²¹³Ù³Ü°ù³¾Äå³Ù°ù²¹²õ are so added, the metre is called MÄlÄgÄtha. In a similar manner, we get DÄma, UddÄma, VidÄma, AvadÄma, SaṃdÄma, ±«±è²¹»åÄå³¾²¹ and MÄlÄdÄma by the addition of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 13 or more ³¦²¹³Ù³Ü°ù³¾Äå³Ù°ù²¹²õ respectively, before the last long letter in the first half of a JÄtiphala.

Chandas (छनà¥à¤¦à¤¸à¥) refers to Sanskrit prosody and represents one of the six Vedangas (auxiliary disciplines belonging to the study of the Vedas). The science of prosody (chandas-shastra) focusses on the study of the poetic meters such as the commonly known twenty-six metres mentioned by Pingalas.
