Theravada (major branch of Buddhism)
: Pali Kanon: Pali Proper NamesOne of the seven heterodox sects which branched off in the second century after the Buddhas death (Mhv.v.12; Dpv.v.54).
They belonged to the Andhakas (q.v.) and held the same views. Kvu.104; Introd.xx.
Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
