: Shodhganga: a concise history of Sanskrit Chanda literatureŚṅk岹 (शङ्करदयालु) (19th century) was a resident of Dāriāvād of Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh. The New Catalogus Catalogorum states that he was alive till 1876, because the manuscript of Vṛttapratyaya, which was noticed by Nesfield was under possession of the author and the report was published in 1876 C.E. Hence his time can be kept before 1876 C.E.

Chandas (छन्दस्) refers to Sanskrit prosody and represents one of the six Vedangas (auxiliary disciplines belonging to the study of the Vedas). The science of prosody (chandas-shastra) focusses on the study of the poetic meters such as the commonly known twenty-six metres mentioned by Pingalas.
