Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraSaptasaptati (啶膏お啷嵿い啶膏お啷嵿い啶むた) refers to 鈥�77 (seventy-seven)鈥� types of Ketus (i.e., luminous bodies such as comets and meteors), according to the B峁沨atsa峁僪it膩 (chapter 11), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Var膩hamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyoti峁).鈥擜ccordingly, 鈥淭he comets that resemble the flaming fire or a garland are 120 in number. They are the sons of Agni and are named Vi艣var奴pa Ketus. When they appear there will be fear from fire. The comets that are dark-red in colour, without disc, presenting the appearance of C膩mara and with scattered rays are named Aru峁嘺 Ketus. They are the sons of V膩yu (the wind) and are 77 [i.e., saptasaptati] in number; when they appear mankind will feel miserable鈥�.
Jyotisha (啶溹啶啶むた啶�, 箩测辞迟颈峁 or jyotish) refers to 鈥榓stronomy鈥� or 鈥淰edic astrology鈥� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
