Sannirodha (सनà¥à¤¨à¤¿à¤°à¥‹à¤§) refers to the “suppression (of poison)â€, according to SarvajñÄnottara VidyÄpÄda 8-9.—Poison was a stock example for the SaiddhÄntikas. In the SarvajñÄnottara we read: “Just as the toxicologist, through the power of visualizations and seed-mantras, effects the removal of poison, so the Ä€cÄrya effects a disjunction with the bonds through Åšaiva [initiation] rituals. Just as a suppression (sannirodha) of poison [sannirodho viá¹£asya tu] [takes place] by the power of mantras and herbs, so there takes place a suppression (sannirodha) of all bonds through initiationâ€.
