: archive.org: Ceylon Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society 1963Ri峁璱gala is the present name for Ari峁弓hagiri: an ancient locality (corresponding to present Ri峁璱gala), that existed near the ancient kingdom of 础苍耻谤腻诲丑补辫耻谤补, Ceylon (Sri Lanka).鈥擜ri峁弓hagiri, present Ri峁璱gala, the highest mountain range in Nuvarakal膩viya (Nuvarak膩l膩viya), which runs parallel to the Eastern Minor Road from the 4th to the 8th mile, is first mentioned as the fortified refuge where Pa峁囜笉ukabhaya established himself for 7 years in the 4th century B.C. At the foot of the mountain, S奴ratissa, early in the 2nd century B.C. built Makulaka or Ma峁単ula-vih膩ra. In an inscription of 2nd B.C. at Ri峁璱gala, the foundation of the village Ari峁璦-mah膩g膩ma is recorded; another inscription of 1st B.C. records the grant to Ari峁璦-vih膩ra of Abadalaka tank. La帽jatissa (b.c 119-110) extended Ari峁弓ha-vih膩ra. Sena I (831-851) built on Ari峁弓hagiri a large, well-equipped and richly endowed Vih膩ra for the Pa峁僺uk奴lika bhikkhus. In this king鈥檚 inscription at Kivuleka岣峚 he is styled the founder of Ri峁璱gal-aram. The S墨giri Graffitimention Ri峁璯al.
