India history and geography
: What is India: Inscriptions of the Śilāhārasṣṭ貹پ (governer) is the official title of a minister belonging of the administration of the state during, the rule of the Śilāhāra dynasty (r. 765-1215 A.D.).—The administration of the State was carried on with the help of Governors (ṣṭ貹پ), Collectors (ṣaⲹ貹پ) and village headmen (峾貹پ). In some later records like the Dive Āgar plate of Mummuṇi, they are called 峾Գٲ (Governor), ⲹ첹 (the Commissioner of a division) and ṻܰ (the Collector of a district). The Governors of provinces were often military officers, who were called 岹ṇḍī貹پ.
Some early records mention ṣṭ貹پ, ṣaⲹ貹پ and 峾貹پ among the persons to whom the royal order regarding land-gifts was communicated, which shows that these officers administered the different divisions and sub-divisions of the kingdom. The formula containing the mention of the ṣt貹پ seems to have been copied verbatim from earlier records. The ṇḍ took the place of the old ṣṭ.
