Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by Varahamihira貹پṣmī (नरपतिलक्ष्मी) refers to “prosperity of the princes�, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 4), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “Having thus described the shape of the moon we next proceed to describe her size (generally): [...] If she should appear broad, she will increase the prosperity of the princes [i.e., Բ貹پṣmī-ṛd徱]; if she should appear big there, will be happiness in the land, and if small, there will be abundance of that grain which men like most�.

Jyotisha (ज्योति�, dzپṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy� or “Vedic astrology� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
