Purana and Itihasa (epic history)
: archive.org: Puranic Encyclopedia°¾±°ùÄå³ÙÄå°ùÂá³Ü²ÔÄ«²â²¹ (किरातारà¥à¤œà¥à¤¨à¥€à¤).—During the life in exile in the forest of the PÄṇá¸avas, Arjuna performed penance to propitiate Åšiva in the HimÄlayas. Disguised as a forest-hunter Åšiva appeared on the scene and tested Arjuna’s valour. Arjuna won in the test and was presented the PÄÅ›upatÄstra by Åšiva. The story is told in Chapter 167 of the Vana Parva. (See under Arjuna).

The Purana (पà¥à¤°à¤¾à¤, purÄṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.

Sanskrit, also spelled संसà¥à¤•ृतमà¥ (²õ²¹á¹ƒs°ìá¹›t²¹³¾), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
