°­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹nagara (कलिङà¥à¤—नगà¤�) is the name of an ancient city of the °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹ country, according to Epigraphia Indica, IV, 187. °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹nagara has been identified with ²Ñ³Ü°ì³ó²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹³¾ on the river VaṃśadharÄ.

°­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹nagara (कलिङà¥à¤—नगà¤�).—Exact location of °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹-nagara is uncertain. Generally, It is taken to be identical with ²Ñ³Ü°ì³ó²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹³¾ on the Vamsaclhara and the adjacent ruins in Ganjam district. Fleet seems inclined to identify it with Kalingapatam, twenty miles north-east of Srikakulam. Jayaswal identifies the capital of KhÄravela with TosalÄ«. B. B. Lal bas given a new suggestion. According to him, °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹-nagara of the °­³óÄå°ù²¹±¹±ð±ô²¹â€™s inscription may be identical with Sisupalgarh, one and a half mile to the south-east of the town of Bhubaneswar. According to B. M. Barua the city of °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹ is Khibira and it was situated somewhere on the banks of the river PrÄcÄ«, and not far from Bhubaneswar and the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves. It may be proposed that the capital of °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹ was located at different places, and the metropolis of this state could as well be Sisupalgarh for sometime, then designated as °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹-nagara.

The Hathigumpha inscription mentions that KhÄravela repaired the buildings, walls and gates in the city of °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹, which were badly damaged by the stormy wind, raised the embankments of the Isitala tank, and restored all damaged gardens. It also mentions the erection of a royal palace on both the banks of the river PrÄcÄ«. the palace was built possibly in °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹-nagafa itself. The record also mentions a canal, which was extended upto the city.

°­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹nagara is the name of an ancient city mentioned in the “Grants from Galavalliâ€� (893 A.D.). The main document begins with the Siddham symbol and the usual praÅ›asti of the Early Eastern Gaá¹…gas in lines 1-11, referring to the issue of the charter from the adhivÄsaka (royal residence) at °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹nagara resembling Amarapura (the city of the gods) and to the devotion of the issuer of the grant to the god, Bhagavat GokarṇasvÄmin (Åšiva), installed on the peak of Mount Mahendra.

These plates (mentioning °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹nagara) were dug up from the fields of a village in the Bobbili Taluk of the Srikakulam District, Andhra. It records the grant of three villages and is dated Gaá¹…ga year 397 (of the GÄá¹…geya dynasty), corresponding to 893-95 A.D. The grant was made in favour of the deity Kauṇá¸uka-Guṇá¸eÅ›vara.

The HÄthigumphÄ inscription clearly shows that the capital of °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹ during the reign of KhÄravela was °­²¹±ô¾±á¹…g²¹nagara which has been satisfactorily identified with Mukhalingaá¹� on the VaṃśadharÄ and the adjacent ruins in Ganjam district, Madras Presidency.
