General definition (in Jainism)
: archive.org: Trisastisalakapurusacaritraٲśٰ (दर्शरात्रि) refers to the “night before the new moon, according to chapter 1.1 [īś-ٰ] of Hemacandra’s 11th century Triṣaṣṭiśalākāpuruṣacaritra: an ancient Sanskrit epic poem narrating the history and legends of sixty-three illustrious persons in Jainism.—ٲśٰ (i.e., 屹ī) [is translated] this way rather than the “night of the new moon of the Lexs., because it is the night before the new moon is visible, and in the Hindu calendar is the last night of the dark fortnight, not the first of the bright fortnight.

Jainism is an Indian religion of Dharma whose doctrine revolves around harmlessness (ahimsa) towards every living being. The two major branches (Digambara and Svetambara) of Jainism stimulate self-control (or, shramana, ‘self-reliance) and spiritual development through a path of peace for the soul to progess to the ultimate goal.
