Alphabetic notation (in ancient India) refers to the idea of using the letters of the alphabet to denote numbers.—This idea can be traced back to Pāṇini (c. 700 B.C.) who has used the vowels of the Sanskrit alphabet to denote numbers. No definite evidence of the extensive use of an alphabetic notation is, however, found upto the 5th century A.D. About this period a number of alphabetic notations were invented by different writers with the sole purpose of being used in verse to denote numbers.
