(-ṣṭ�) 1) Approaching, moving towards, access; e. g. Ṛgv.: abhīmavanvantsvṣṭmūtayontarikṣaprā� taviṣībhirāvṛtam . indram &c. (ⲹṇa: = śobhanābhyeṣaṇavanta� śobhanābhigamanamityartha� i. e. with graceful motion); or sa vetasu� daśamāya� daśoṇi� tūtujimindra� svṣṭsumna� &c. 2) One who approaches with a hostile purpose, attacking, conquering; an enemy; e. g. Ṛgv., Sāmav., Vājas.: (indra) mahāṃ~ ṣṭrojasā (.: = 󾱲Գ i. e. śٰūṇām󾱲󲹱, but see also Ii. 2.); or Ṛgv.: indra svarṣ� janayannahāni jigāyośigbhi� pṛtanā ṣṭ� (.: = 󾱲Գ i. e. abhibhāvuka� san); comp. also ṣṭ.

3) One who approaches for the sake of a desire, desirous of; e. g. Ṛgv.: ūrjo napādabhiṣṭaye (.: = abhīcchate mahyamanna� prayaccheti śeṣa�). E. According to ⲹṇa, i� with abhi, kṛt aff. ktin, when ṣṭ would stand in the room of īṣṭi, analogously to śakandhu, halīṣ� &c. for śakāndhu, haleṣ� &c.; a more plausible E., however, seems to be ٳ with abhi, kṛt or u�. aff. ki, when ṣṭ would stand instead of ṣṭ, analogously to suṣṭu, duṣṭu, pulasti (explained by Ѳī. to . 16. 43.: parogre tiṣṭhati pulasti� . yasya tatva� chāndasa� rasya latva� ca) &c.; an E. as ‘to be� with abhi. kṛt aff. ktin, which is countenanced, too, by another explanation offered by Ѳī󲹰 on pulasti, might apply to the meaning ‘attacking, conquering�, but would be scarcely reconcilable with the meanings implying ‘aDz� and ‘aٲԳ�. Ii. 1. f.

(-ṣṭ�) Sacrificing towards, in presence of or completely, a complete sacrifice; e. g. Ṛgv.: indra sadyaścittamabhiṣṭaye &c. (see above 1. 1. 3.; the word being explained by . also ābhimukhyena yāgāya); or vanemā te ṣṭbhi� (.: = 󲹱�; comp. also I. 1. 1. and Iii. 1.); or śa� no devīrabhiṣṭaya āpa� (see above 1. 1. 3.; .: = ⲹñⲹ); or Vājas.: daivī� dhiya� manāmahe sumṛḍīkamabhiṣṭaye (Ѳī.: = abhi samantādyajanamṣṭḥ…abhimukhatvena prāptasya yajñasya siddhyartham); comp. also ṣṭṛt. 2. m.

Ṛgv.: mahāṃ~ ṣṭrojasā (see above I. 2. 2.; . in the corresponding 峾岹- verse: = ābhimukhyena yaṣṭavya�, besides abhyeṣaṇaśīlo vā śatrūṇām); or Vājas.: īḍito devairharivāṃ~ 2 .. ṣṭrājuhvāno haviṣ� śardhamāna� (where the word has the same sense and need not be explained as a [bahuvrihi compound], as Ѳī. does: abhi samantādiṣṭiryāgo yasya; comp. also Iii. 2.). E. yaj with abhi, kṛt aff. ktin; comp. the remark under E. I. Iii. 1. f.

(-ṣṭ�) Praise, an encomiastic hymn; e. g. Ṛgv.: vanemā te ṣṭbhi� (see 1. 1. 1. and Ii. 1.; ⲹṇa giving besides the quoted explanation also the sense ٴdzٰ�). 2. m.

(-ṣṭ�) One who is praised; e. g. Vājas.: īḍito devairhariśāṃ~ 2 .. ṣṭ� (see Ii. 2.; Ѳī. giving besides the quoted explanation also the following: abhiṣṭūyata ityṣṭ�). E. stu with abhi, u�. aff. ḍi (accord. to Ѳī󲹰). [The meanings s. Ii. and Iii. and the corresponding Ee. do not appear required by the context in the passages where the word occurs; and the commentators themselves either disagree or give the option of the meanings s. I. The Ṛgv. Prātisākhya observes that if ṣṭ precedes as first part of a compound another word beginning with a s, this s does not become �; e. g. svṣṭsumna, not svṣṭṣumṇa.]
